Yunika opened Bunkayokocho, its first foray into the restaurant business, in June 1995 on the third floor of the Urban Misawa Building, a three-minute walk from Machida Station on the JR and Odakyu Lines.
Bunkayokocho pioneered the open kitchen design so common today with what was then an unusual layout. The restaurants are located in different places in the building, with a total of 150 seats at counters and tables, for an open-air, street stall feel.
This unique Japanese pub attracts both young and old alike — for our younger customers the street stall atmosphere is innovative and fresh, while it brings back memories of long ago for older Japanese. Both enjoy the wide variety of dishes, inexpensive prices, and large portions. Despite all the rival restaurants and bars crowding into the Machida Station neighborhood, Bunkayokocho still consistently draws large crowds.

Our managers and waiting staff are in their 20's and 30's, the same age as our main target demographic. We know our customers well and "speak their language," so our growing fan base has responded in kind — giving us the affectionate nickname "Bunyoko." And we've gained a reputation as the only indoor street stall-type pub in Japan.
At first glance, the stalls scattered around the space would appear an extremely inefficient way of operating a restaurant. In reality, though, cooks and wait staff chat and joke with customers at six different stations, providing a unique style of premium hospitality.
The entirely unfinished wood décor and loud conversations complete the raucous mood as shouted orders fly back and forth between customer and waiter: "Two draft beers!" "Got it. Two draft beers!"
Six separate kitchens, six separate parties all under a single roof — that's the key to the unique Bunkayokocho management style, and to its incredible popularity.
